Title: Protecting the Team
Original Fic: Bonding; http://angel-negra.dreamwidth.org/148568.html
For Angel Negra
Summary: Syd and Z fight while Sky watches and ponders over it.
Rating: G
Tag: SPD, Sky, Syd, Z Syd/Z
Pairing: Syd/Z
Dodge. Duck. Hit. Syd flew back as Z readied her next attack. Syd leapt out of the way, dodging Z’s plan but Z was ready for her. Sky watched as Z and Syd sparred, sighing quietly as Z easily took control. He didn’t know what Syd was thinking, but she couldn’t handle Z by herself. Sky knew it and he’d hoped she knew it. Bridge, she, and he had had difficulties taking on Jack and Z before. While Sky knew he was better than Jack, it wasn’t like Syd was the best fighter. For all that Bridge and Syd did to drive him nuts, they were still his teammates and he knew their weaknesses and strengths. Syd was a heavy hitter. She didn’t have the skills that Z had and she wasn’t graceful. She counted on being able to find something dense and use her power to continue.
She also wasn’t stupid which was why Sky couldn’t figure out why she’d agreed to do this. He watched more carefully as Z concentrated her next hit without pulling back. Syd, on the other hand, wasn’t only losing but she seemed distracted. It wasn’t thinking about shopping distracted, her expression didn’t show that and she hadn’t gotten anything knew that she wanted to show off since he kept track of that stuff. No, the last time he’d seen her like this, she’d been mooning over some guy. Oh no.
He managed to keep his newfound realization silent as Syd looked more and more frustrated. Of course, it was his luck, one of his teammates would fall for the other. It wasn’t even the two teammates he accepted not that he wanted Bridge and Syd together either. Sky pondered this for a minute before he came up with two realizations: He didn’t want Syd getting involved with a criminal and the team couldn’t handle the eventual break-up. First off, Z would be a bad influence. He wasn’t saying that Syd would rob a back, but she might try to cover for Z which was just as bad. Even if Syd did do her job, he didn’t want to be having to talk in between the two because they didn’t want to talk to each other. Syd wouldn’t understand if he tried to explain it to her, so he made a quick decision. “Z, if you’re not too tired, I’ll spar with you next.”
Z laughed. “I’m barely breaking a sweat,” she answered, grinning at him. “You’re on!”
Sky nodded as Syd’s expression darkened. He knew she wouldn’t be happy with it, but for the good of the team and for Syd’s own sake, he’s try to keep inbetween the crush until it blew over and Syd was after something else. After all, isn’t that what a good leader was supposed to do?
